Hiring a DJ for an Elementary School Dance in RI or MA: A Guide for PTOs and Schools
An elementary school dance is a completely different crowd from a wedding. The kids have energy to burn, the music has to be 100% clean, and parents and teachers need the night to run on time. Here's how I run a school dance and what to look for when you hire a DJ in Rhode Island or Massachusetts.
What a great elementary school dance DJ does
- Plays clean, kid-friendly music only: radio edits, current hits kids know, and the classics that get everyone moving.
- Runs games and group dances: Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Cotton Eye Joe, freeze dance, limbo, conga lines and dance contests.
- Uses the mic to keep things organized: announcements, raffles, pizza time and the last dance.
- Brings safe, professional equipment with cables taped down and the setup kept clear of traffic.
- Carries liability insurance and can send the school or district a certificate of insurance.
How long should a school dance be?
For elementary schools, 90 minutes to 2 hours is the sweet spot. That's enough time for a warm-up, two or three game blocks and a big finish, without losing the younger grades. I arrive about an hour early to set up in the gym, cafeteria or all-purpose room.
Theme ideas that work
- Glow dance (with dance-floor lighting)
- Valentine's or Sweetheart dance
- Father-daughter or family dance
- Halloween costume dance
- Spring fling or end-of-year party
What does a school dance DJ cost?
My event packages start at $595 for up to 4 hours of DJ service with dance-floor lighting, which covers a typical school dance with time to spare. A $250 deposit reserves the date. See all options on my event packages page.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do you play clean versions only, and how do you handle requests?
- Can you send a certificate of insurance?
- What games and group dances do you run for this age group?
- How much space and power do you need?
- Will you use the mic for our announcements and raffles?
I DJ elementary school dances across Rhode Island and Massachusetts and I'm booking through December 2027. Weeknight and Friday dates are welcome.
